Magic Bands

It has been brought to my attention by someone reading this blog that Walt Disney World has a new contraption that people do not know about.....

MAGIC BANDS

These are amazing little tools that work almost exactly like a Key to the World Card, but then you would have to know what that was also!

Magic Bands have an RFID chip inside. When you go to Disney World these are available to you. There are a few different ways to acquire them.

First, if you are staying on site (meaning in a Disney World Resort property) then they will be automatically issued to you free of charge.

The standard color is gray. This will be issued and waiting for you at your resort if you had no idea about them. If you have a My Disney Experience account and are planning your trip more than 30 days ahead of time, you will have the option to customize what colors everyone wants along with the name you would like to appear on the bottom of the band. You will also be able to have them shipped to your house. International visitors can pick them up at check in.

Second, if you are staying offsite (any other non-Disney hotel in the Orlando or Kissimmee area) you may purchase them while at Disney.


Now the question is what are they used for! Well, they are used for your park admission. You link your tickets to them either at a ticket window or on the My Disney Experience website (an app is also available).

They can also be linked to a credit card so that you may use them for purchases. No credit card or personal information is actually stored on the bands. It is in Disney's system (where it would be anyway) and when you use the band to make a purchase you enter the pin number you chose and Disney then completes the transaction. You may say 'why would I need that I can just pay with my card', and this is true however the ease of not having to pull out your wallet and/or not having to carry you wallet at all is beneficial.

Another thing the bands can be used for is Fastpass+. This is the new system at Disney. I guess I should pause here and write another entry on that so I can highlight the link.... I will be right back! Ok I'm back not that you could tell I left lol. They bands are used to claim your Fastpasses and to go to the kiosk to book originals or extras.

If you are staying onsite they also open your room door, the laundry room door, pool doors, and gates to parking areas for resort guests only.

They are actually quite a convenient little tool and they look pretty good. You can of course add accessories or not either way I don't find them to be bothersome while on and they have many different holes for different wrist sizes.

'What happens if  don't have a Magic Band'?  Well your park admission ticket will work for your Fastpasses and park entry. If you are onsite and chose to not use your magic band that is issued free of charge then your room key will work the same way as the magic band.
